History of the Zadroga Bill
The Zadroga Bill received its name in honor of James Zadroga (1971 – 2006), an officer of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). His death has been attributed to his participation in the rescue and recovery of the World Trade Center tragedy that occurred on September 1, 2001. He spent 450 hours participating in the World Trade Center rescue missions and the World Trade Center clean-ups.
A few weeks after his work at the World Trade Center was finished James Zadrogo developed a persistent cough which eventually progressed into shortnesss of breath limiting the distance he was able to walk to less than 100 feet. Eventually, after struggling with a respiratory disease for the next few years, James Zadroga passed away on January 5, 2006.
